Preferred Specimen:

5 mL urine (2 mL minimum)

Instructions:

Exercise within 24 hr, infection, fever congestive heart failure, marked hyperglycemia and marked hypertension may elevate urinary albumin excretion over baseline values.

Reference Range:

The ADA (Diabetes Care (1997) 20:S24-S27) has defined abnormalities in albumin excretion as follows:

Normal: < 30 mg/24 hours
Microalbuminuria: 30 - 299 mg/24 hours
Clinical albuminuria: > or = 300 mg/24 hours

The ADA recommends that at least two of three specimens collected within a 3-6 month period be abnormal before considering a patient to be within a diagnostic category.
