Specimen Container:

Ova and parasite tube set

Preferred Specimen:

10 grams preserved stool, submitted in a 10% Formalin container

Instructions:

Transfer stool within 30 minutes of collection into Formalin vial. Fill to line on transport vial. Mix contents thoroughly until homogenous. Other acceptable specimens include stool in MIF or SAF and fresh unpreserved stool, either refrigerated (48 hours) or frozen.

Room temperature and Refrigerated: 60 days
Frozen: Unacceptable

Reject Criteria:

Specimens other than stool preserved in 10% Formalin, MIF, SAF or Cary Blair.

Clinical Use:

Giardia is a protozoan that can cause diarrhea. Infection occurs after ingestion of contaminated food or water. Antigen detection is considered an alternative to stool examination.
